Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper says he "loves" being mayor -- and is opting out of a run for governor.
Hickenlooper told cabinet members about his decision at a morning meeting, and made it official during a noontime news conference.
The first-term mayor says he wants to finish the work he's started as mayor, and show citizens that local government can carry through on its commitments -- and practice what it preaches.
Former Denver district attorney Bill Ritter says he's glad Hickenlooper decided to complete his ambitious agenda for the city, including improving schools and ending homelessness.
Ritter has been campaigning for the Democratic nomination for nearly a year. Freshman state Representative Gary Lindstrom is also running for the party's nod.
Representative Bob Beauprez and former state technology secretary Marc Holtzman are running for the GOP nomination.
Republican Governor Bill Owens is prohibited from seeking re-election because of term limits.
