A Fort Carson soldier from Michigan has died after an improvised explosive device blew up near his tank in Iraq.
Military officials say Army Specialist Walter Howard II died Thursday.
The 35-year-old Howard grew up in Macomb County's Clinton Township and moved to Rochester with his wife about two years ago. His widow and their 15-month-old daughter live on base at Fort Carson, Colorado.
Howard joined the Navy a few months after graduating from Fraser High School. He worked with computers in the automobile design field, but decided to re-enlist in the Army last summer after being laid off several times.
