Colorado now has four, but it's expected to be at least another six years before a fifth comes our way.
Area codes around the state are NOT running out of numbers as quickly as some residents and business owners might've expected, despite an increasing demand from Internet, wireless and other telecommunications services.
The latest newsletter of the state Public Utilities Commission cites data from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, saying the 970 area code in western and northern Colorado will be the first to use all its numbers -- but not until the last quarter of 2012.
And the 303, 720, and 719 area codes are expected to have enough useable numbers to last until 2020.
The state had just one area code, 303, until 1988, when 719 was born.
