Fort Carson's largest combat unit is getting ready to deploy. The 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment's 5400 soldiers will soon be leaving Colorado Springs. The orders came down around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
The 3rd Cavalry has a history of being the first on scene in battle. The members of this Fort Carson cavalry have served America for 157 years. They were the first element to enter France and Germany in WWII. They were also activated during the Gulf War.
The cavalry has 300 tanks and armored fighting vehicles as well as 80 aircraft including Apache attack helicopters. Their job is to secure positions, collect information and defend or attack in combat.
The troops are expected to ship out in the next few weeks, though Fort Carson is not saying exactly when. Where they are headed has also not been made public.
This latest deployment brings the total number of Fort Carson troops called up to 11,000.
Fort Carson has 15,000 soldiers on active duty.
