Enrollment at the state's public schools grew by just over 1%
last year, the smallest increase since 1999. Job cuts, especially along the Front Range, have more families leaving than coming to Colorado.
In Boulder, school board members are considering closing up to
six schools and Jefferson County, the state's largest school
district, may also close some schools next year.
Rural areas also are hurting. The Dolores R-E-2 school district in southwestern Colorado lost 77 students this year, or 17% of its student body. Next year, the district is considering eliminating two or three jobs, a big cut for a staff of only 31.
