Pet "Companion" Bill Pulled

A Colorado lawmaker has pulled a bill that would have allowed pet owners to sue over loss of companionship.

Colorado Springs Representative Mark Cloer says veterinarians mischaracterized his bill and made it the object of international ridicule.

Cloer says he was trying to find a way to force veterinarians to stop over-vaccinating pets. He had said the only way to do that was to put financial pressure on them by allowing pet owners to sue for more money.

The Republican lawmaker says state law considers pets as property. His bill would have recognized pets as companions and allowed owners to collect up to $100,000 for animal cruelty and negligent health care.
