Former El Paso County Sheriff to Run for Hefley's House Seat

Former El Paso County Sheriff John Wesley Anderson says he WILL challenge ten-term Republican Representative Joel Hefley for the GOP nomination in Colorado's Fifth Congressional District.

Anderson established an exploratory committee last August to help him decide whether to challenge Hefley, and says he's traveled around the district ever since.

Hefley hasn't said if he'll seek an eleventh term, but White House officials are urging him NOT to retire.

Anderson says he supports term limits, and is pledging to serve no more than 12 years in the House if elected.

He spent 22 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department before becoming sheriff in January 1995. He served for eight years.

Anderson has worked as a homeland security and defense expert for Lockheed Martin Corporation since then.
