It was a shocking scene on the southwest side of the Springs Wednesday after a rear-ended vehicle blew up in the middle of a busy intersection, leaving nothing more than a charred shell behind.

It happened on Highway 115 and Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard in Colorado Springs about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say a Mercedes was stopped at a red light when a Volkswagen rammed into its rear, forcing the Mercedes into the middle of the intersection. After a ruptured gas line in the vehicle sparked a fire, the driver scrambled out of the car. Then as stunned onlookers watched, a huge black cloud formed and parts of the car went flying. Something had exploded.

"Debris field from that...it flew 75 to 150 feet from the explosion," an officer told 11 News.

Police say there were five oxygen tanks in the Mercedes' trunk; two were ignited after the crash.

The Mercedes was left as nothing more than a charred shell. Two police cruiser and one fire truck were damaged by flying debris.

The driver was taken to the hospital for serious spinal fracture. The driver of the Volkswagen, identified as Joshua Morgan, was also taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. He was later arrested on allegations that he was driving under the influence of drugs.
