A vehicle break-in forced two Pueblo schools to go on lockdown while police searched the area for the suspect.

The suspect remains at large, though the lockdown was lifted just over an hour later.

According to police, the vehicle's owner was in his home on the 2000 block of West 31st just before 2 p.m. when he heard the sound of glass shattering outside. When he went to investigate, he saw a man reaching into his vehicle. Before he could react, the suspect grabbed a high-powered hunting rifle from the car and took off in dark green Honda 4-door.

A witness told police that he saw the same green Honda run a stop sign as he sped away from the area, then abandon the vehicle on the 3000 block of Morris Avenue, about a quarter-mile away from the crime scene. The suspect reportedly ran west into a trailer park, still clutching the rifle. Police set up a perimeter around the trailer park and searched each trailer, but were unable to locate him.

Centennial High School and Morton Elementary School were both placed on lockdown during this time. The lockdown was lifted around 3:15 p.m.

The suspect has been described as a tall, thin white man dressed in baggy blue jeans and a white t-shirt, wearing a dark-colored baseball cap and sunglasses. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police at 719-553-2502 or Crime Stoppers at 719-542-STOP.
