The Boulder Police Department has placed two officers on leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation into an elk's shooting death.
City officials said Friday that Sam Carter and Brent Curnow are on paid administrative leave.
Boulder police say an on-duty officer killed the animal late Tuesday, and an off-duty officer took the elk home to be processed for meat. The officer who shot the elk allegedly said it was limping and appeared as if it needed to be put down, though a resident has said it wasn't limping a few hours before it died.
Meanwhile, the Daily Camera reports, Boulder County sheriff's officials are investigating what role a sheriff's deputy at the scene might have played.
Colorado wildlife officials are investigating whether any crimes occurred.
