Two black bears have been killed the last couple weeks on Interstate 70 around Vail and state officials are urging drivers to watch out for the roaming wildlife.

State Trooper Kevin Hamill says he hopes people will slow down and look out for bears in Dowd Junction, where they often cross the interstate and U.S. 6 from dusk until dawn. He says bear-crossing signs might be needed.

State wildlife officials say bears might be wandering around now because their normal food, including wild berries, aren't ready yet.

A large number of deer and elk were killed by vehicles this winter as they crossed the highway looking for food. They had trouble finding food because of the heavy snows.
