The state of Colorado will place strict restrictions on people who want to obtain a list of convicted sex offenders under a new set of rules that will take effect next week.

The Associated Press got a copy of the rules, which will limit access to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation's sex offender registry.

People who reside in a law enforcement department's jurisdiction or neighboring jurisdiction may get information on convicted sex offenders in their hometowns by showing proof of residency.

But those living outside the boundaries will have to specify a threat or the need for protection to obtain information on the CBI's list.

The rules that were drafted by a task force and the state Department of Public Safety take effect Jan. 30.
