The 2013 Super Bowl weekend saw the highest number of DUI arrests since the introduction of the statewide enforcement period "Heat Is On" four years ago.
More than 420 drivers throughout Colorado were arrested between Friday, Feb. 1-Monday, Feb. 4 on suspicions of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. One alcohol-related fatality was also reported, based on preliminary reports.
The rise in arrests in attributed to the increase in participating law enforcement during the enforcement period. The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol authorized all local law enforcement to participate in the "Heat Is On" campaign during Super Bowl weekend rather than just agencies in the Denver metro area, the Front Range and Mesa County as had been done in the past. More than 100 law enforcement agencies throughout the state took part in the campaign.
“It’s clear that there is much more work to be done to educate Coloradans on drinking and driving,” said Darrell Lingk, Director of Transportation Safety said in a statement. “Even though we urged people to plan ahead, at least 421 people put both themselves and others in danger when they made the decision to drive under the influence. Now they are facing fines and costs totaling $10,270.”
According to CDOT, 138 of the arrests took place on Super Bowl Sunday. Denver had the most arrests over the three-day period with 54 arrests, followed by Aurora with 32 arrests and then Colorado Springs with 28.
The next DUI crackdown comes in March over St. Patrick's Day weekend. CDOT promises even tougher DUI enforcement then.
