An ex-con shared his expertise on how you can keep yourself, your family and your home safe from burglars.

Monday night on 11 News at 10 p.m., a reformed crook broke into a Colorado Springs house live with the homeowners’ permission.

In just 2 minutes and 54 seconds, he made away with 6 credit cards, a gun, laptop, digital camera, jewelry, 2 iPods and other valuable items. After he burglarized the home, he drove off in one of the homeowner’s cars. The keys had been left by the front door.

“I thought he would’ve taken the TV, the DVD player, but the credit cards… I am shocked and it’s disturbing to think about,” said Roland, the homeowner.

The crook, “Greg”, got into the house by slipping through an unlocked basement window.

He said that one of the mistakes homeowners make is leaving their windows open during nice weather.

“Greg” was asked to do this assignment with 11 News. He's one of the most notorious crooks to hit Colorado Springs, breaking into 300 homes before he was caught. He doesn't do it any more and served his time decades ago.

Now on the good side of the law, he hopes his secrets open the eyes of all homeowners who think they’re safe.

If you want to learn more about keeping your family and your home safe, the Colorado Springs Police Department is holding a class Tuesday night, May 20. It's at 6:30 p.m. at the Sand Creek Police Substation at 4125 Center Park Drive near Fountain and South Academy. It's free and open to the public.

11 News will have a follow-up to this story Tuesday at 10 p.m.

How in the world could this information hurt anyone??? It was very informative!! You should be taking in all the information you can get! Television shows are filled with ideas ranging from shoplifting to murder. If everybody took every precaution possible, then it wouldn't matter if you had people trying to beat this guys time because they wouldn't be able to get in!! It didn't look like he was trying to beat a record. I, as a homeowner, appreciate information like this as opposed to news that isn't very informative!! Thanks.

excellent information!!! this guy obviously knew what he was doing. common sense or not, we all slip up when leaving our house one way or another. i would be curious to know what else he has to offer. 3 minutes just doesn't seem like enough time to cover all the inside information.i would bet that a big percentage of his victims were ones like R who thinks he/she is safe with bars on his windows!!we live in a wealthy community, and i have never seen a home with bars on the window. i also wouldn't think that over 300 victims had their windows open. thanks again!!

Most households have at least 2 vehicles and if you go somewhere as a family, we learn not to leave your keys to the vehicles left behind easily accessible. That is good info that I don't think most people WITH common sense think about. We think more about the convenience of knowing where our keys are the next time we need them. This is a great story. How about a follow-up to how "Greg" got caught and what made him change his ways?

How stupid can you be to have done this. Great job, now you will have all these idiots watching your "demonstration" and they will go out and try it, or try to beat this ex-cons time. Don't you have anything ANYTHING better to do? Protect people, that was the intent, did anyone stop and think that this could end up hurting more people than it helps. Thanks Alot,

I thought the way the story was presented (A LIVE break-in) was pretty cool. It was definately an intersting way to remind us how quickly one can loose their stuff/identity. I agree, some of it was common sense, but didn't "greg" say he hit over 300 homes? Common or not, one stupid mistake can really cost you. Plus - I didn't get the impression that "Greg" needed an open window. I thought it was more about how easy it was to get in and get out, and what the crook looks for.

I was so expecting "Greg" to just keep driving and never come back...That would've been a great news story! How would "Greg" have gotten in the house if the window wasn't WIDE open. All that time and resarch, money spent on filming and all KKTV had to say was "Keep your windows and doors closed and locked, or restricted so they cannot open more than a few inches." All my windows have bars to restrict how far they open, and I have double locks on all exterior doors. Common sense, common sense.

Since the announcement for this class was made today (class was yesterday), I would like to know if there will be another class offered in the near future?
