A Grand Junction woman says a state trooper left her baby and her teenage niece unattended in her car for 25 minutes one night when he took her to jail after a traffic stop.

The Colorado State Patrol says it has taken action against the trooper, but officials say they can't give specifics because it's a personnel issue.

Keio Saupaia says Trooper Jeffrey Verbas pulled her over at about 11 p.m. on April 28 when she had her 7-month-old daughter and 15-year-old niece with her.

She says Verbas contacted her sister to come get the children, but that he didn't wait for the sister to arrive before taking Saupaia to jail.

Verbas doesn't have a listed phone number, and a State Patrol spokesman didn't immediately return a call to The Associated Press.

Saupaia says she was booked into jail on a 10-year-old warrant for a dog violation.

Wasn't the 15-year old niece capable of watching the baby?

I'm sorry...a 15-year-old and infant left alone AT NIGHT in a car is "doing the right thing"? Hardly. They should have been taken along with the mother/aunt in the same vehicle or waited for another trooper to arrive to take them to the station or someplace safe to wait for the other family member. What an irresponsible and pompous thing to do! Parents are charged every day for being caught leaving their kids in broad daylight at Walmart! This trooper should face the same consequences! Par for the course!

i agree and disagree with both Anonymous' comments. At 15 she is old enough to watch the baby, but at the same time she could have not been able for many reasons, it would have been much smarter if the officer had at least stayed with them until someone else got there. What if a crook came along and hurt them? Just really not a good place to put a 15-year-old in.

this Baby was not left alone in the Car because of the 15 year old Niece who was also in the Car. I'm sure that she was able to look after the Baby after the Mother was taken to jail. So the Trooper did nothing wrong.

The cop did the right thing. The niece is old enough to watch after the child. A cop is never wrong!

i hope that the officer gets suspended without pay and has to take a parenting class of some type. Also be charged with abandoment or endangerment.
