A Colorado Springs church is sprayed with bullets. Police say it happened early Monday morning at Saint Luke's Lutheran Church near N Union Blvd and Montebello Dr W.
Police say they're sure the gunman fired the bullets from a car. That's because they found shell casings on the side of the road.
In all, between eight and six rounds of bullets were shot out. Many of them ricocheted throughout the church.
"Glass everywhere," said Ron Richer, the church's maintenance worker.
Whoever did it left behind gaping holes and bullet fragments.
"I dug the bullet out," said Richer.
"Some shots were fired into the sanctuary," said Pastor David Wendel.
The church wasn't empty at the time. Melissa Land was inside when the bullets came flying inside.
"Next thing I know, I just heard this loud pop, pop, pop," said Land.
Land was inside early Monday morning cleaning up. She was inside the room where the bullets blew in through.
"Rounds are going off, windows are breaking, bullets bouncing off the walls," said Richer.
The second the coast was clear, "I ran over into a hallway and called 911 on my cell phone," said Land.
Police and the people of the church are asking themselves, why?
"Especially a church, that just seems a little, like they're heaping burning coals on their heads for the rest of eternity. But I don't think it was personal," said Pastor Wendel.
Police say the bullets caused about $500 in damage.
