Saturday is a big political day in Colorado Springs. Preparations are underway for the Colorado State Democratic Assembly and Convention, which opens Saturday at the World Arena.

Around 10,000 state delegates and elected officials are expected. Issues among the political party will be discussed and delegates will be narrowed down. Only a handful of the 10,000 or so delegates will go to the National Convention in Denver.

Lt. Skip Arms with the Colorado Springs Police Department says they've been planning for Saturday's event for several months and security measures will be in place.

Fewer than 100 protesters are expected, but officials say there will be two designated free speech zones in the World Arena parking lot. The hope is that there will be no trouble but police say they are prepared.

Gates into the World Arena open at 6 a.m. Doors open at 7 a.m.

Drivers are encouraged to car pool and get there early.

Those without tickets or credentials won't be allowed in.

Delegates can still get credentials and tickets on Saturday at the Hampton Inn from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The Colorado Republican convention will be held later in May in Broomfield.

Colo Springs, they don't like Democrats, but love the money they bring for this convention.
