It now looks like Fourth Judicial District Attorney John Newsome will likely have to defeat a fellow Republican before he can be re-elected in November.

The Secretary of State's Office confirms that former Assistant District Attorney Dan May is making plans to petition onto the September primary ballot. May lost to Newsome in the primary 4 years ago and has since taken a job in the Douglas County Prosecutor's Office.

DA John Newsome has apologized for actions after television news reports that showed him drinking a large amount of beer and then driving away in his county vehicle.

Dan May will need to gather one a thousand signatures before the end of the month to secure a spot on the primary ballot.
