A grass fire burning east of Colorado Springs has reportedly destroyed at least 9,000 acres, but Sunday crews have it contained 100 percent.
Initial reports say the blaze started near Highway 94 and Page Road Saturday around 1 p.m.
An El Paso County spokesperson said that it grew 13 miles from where it started.
The blaze forced crews to shut down Peyton Highway between Highway 94 and Drennan Road, later extending the closure to Squirrel Creek Road.
El Paso County Sheriff's spokesperson Lt. Lari Sevene says a total number of acres burned is unknown at this time, but a Sunday flyover will help crews better determine how large the fire was.
4 structures burned, one of those was a home, according to El Paso County authorities.
150 firefighters and 10 agencies responded to the fire.
Reverse 911 was used, telling residents to evacuate a 12 mile radius in the Ellicott area.
Most of those residents are back in their homes Saturday night.
So far no injuries are reported, and no loss of livestock as of yet.
The initial blaze also sparked a fire within Schriever Air Force Base property.
That fire crossed the perimeter fence line on the northeast side of the installation.
It is reportedly 100 percent contained.
The fire on Schriever Air Force Base burned approximately 600 acres of grassland on the base property.
The fire on the base has been contained by the Schriever AFB Fire Department. There is no impact to the installations mission.
