Satellite Headed Toward Earth

Updated: Mon 8:28 AM, Jan 20, 2003

A satellite that resembles a 200-pound disco ball is making its last dance toward Earth, providing thousands of students one final science lesson.

Scientists estimate Starshine Three will re-enter the earth's atmosphere Monday somewhere between northern Canada and the Indian Ocean off the coast of southern Africa.

Students involved in making the hollow aluminum sphere are watching the skies for the chance to see its re-entry.

It was created using one-inch diameter mirrors polished by about 30,000 students around the globe.

The satellite is about 37 inches in diameter. It was designed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and built by Monument, Colorado-based Project Starshine.
