Terry Barton in Court

A woman accused of setting a devastating wildfire southwest of Denver was advised of the charges against her at an initial appearance in federal court Monday.

Terry Barton sat quietly but her voice wavered as she answered questions from U.S. Magistrate Michael Watanabe in Denver.

Watanabe told her she could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

He also appointed a federal public defender and ordered her held without bail until Thursday, when another hearing will determine if she'll be released.

U.S. Attorney John Suthers opposes releasing Barton. He says Barton faces considerable hostility if she returns to the community of Florissant and could be a flight risk.
