Colorado Senator Wayne Allard has proposed allowing a voluntary, nondenominational prayer at the Air Force Academy if the superintendent thinks it's appropriate.
The Republican has made the proposal in an amendment to a defense bill. Air Force officials recently issued guidelines on religious tolerance after some cadets complained of being pressured by conservative Christian cadets and faculty.
The guidelines discourage public prayer at official functions and urge commanders to be sensitive about personal expressions of religious faith. Football coach Fisher DeBerry has dropped pre- and post-game prayers as a result.
Allard says his proposal on voluntary prayer would be a commonsense way to clear up some of the confusion about the guidelines. He is a member of the Air Force Academy Board of Visitors -- an oversight board.
