A state law that makes it easy for high school athletes to transfer to different schools has led to a free agency that hurts other students on the playing field and in the classroom.
That's what one parent told a legislative committee, which later approved a proposal to fix that situation and advanced it to the full House.
Allen Bucher's son Ryan played quarterback for Chatfield High School, but was bumped when 17 star football players transferred in. Bucher says Chatfield won the state championship in its class that year at the expense of students who grew up in the area and had expected to play on the varsity team.
The proposal will let the Colorado High School Activities Association set the rules for transfers.
