A single-engine plane crashed on Vail Pass and skidded along Interstate 70 Friday, injuring the pilot and a passenger.

Witnesses say the plane touched down twice on the westbound lanes before clipping a sign and crashing into trees 25 yards from the road. One motorcyclist had to duck out of harm's way.

The pilot, Brooks Johnson, and his passenger and friend, John Clark, are from Green River, Wyoming.

Johnson's wife, Nancy, says her husband has a fractured back. Clark walked away from the crash and says he would fly with Johnson again.

The men were en route to Leadville.

No other injuries or ground crashes were reported.

The crash backed up traffic for two miles on westbound I-70 at one point.
