Colorado Growth Slowed

Colorado dropped out of the five fastest growing states in the nation last year as the state struggled through a recession.

The state fell from the third to the sixth fastest growing between July 2001 and July 2002, according to Census Bureau estimates.

The report found that the state added about 75,000 people, or 1.7%, during the year, down from the 95,000, or 2.2%, the pace the year before.

The slowdown was enough to allow Florida, Texas and Georgia to surpass Colorado's growth rate, however. The Census Bureau estimated Colorado's population to be 4.5 million.

But, in another Census report released, Douglas County added a new national title last year, the busiest homebuilding county in the U.S.
