Smoking Prevention Protest

More than a hundred students from around the state rallied at the state Capitol to ask lawmakers not to cut smoking prevention programs.

Governor Owens has proposed $11.5 million in cuts for smoking prevention and research funded by Colorado's share of a multi-state lawsuit settlement with tobacco companies.

The cuts represent half the funding going to those programs.

Legislators are looking to shore up what many have called the weakest budget since the Great Depression. They face $850 million in cuts.

Representative John Witwer says there are no aspects of the budget that aren't going to be cut, and says Owens recommendations are reasonable.

The cuts to the tobacco programs are among proposals Owens has recommended to save about $700 million.
