Senator Allard Supports Lott's Decision

Republican Senator Wayne Allard wants like to see Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee replace Trent Lott as Senate G-O-P leader. Lott stepped down from the leadership role earlier today because of fallout from a comment he made lamenting Senator Strom Thurmond's failed bid for president in 1948. Thurmond ran as a segregationist that year. Allard says Lott did the right thing for the country, the Senate and the party by stepping down as majority leader. He says he looks forward to working with Republican colleagues in selecting a new majority leader, and he is currently giving his endorsement to Frist. Colorado's other Republican senator -- Ben Nighthorse Campbell-- didn't return a telephone message seeking comment.
