About 1,200 additional law enforcement officers will be on state highways this holiday season to reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities.
The program starts tomorrow and runs through Jan. 5. Gov. Bill Owens says it's the largest effort of its kind in state history.
Owens says there were 174 alcohol-related traffic deaths during the first nine months of the year. That's down from 194 during the same time a year ago.
The statewide crackdown is funded in part through grants from the Law Enforcement Assistant Fund, which uses fees paid by convicted drunken drivers to help improve enforcement.
