Mustard Agent Contract

Updated: Thu 7:07 AM, Dec 19, 2002

Bechtel National gets to keep its government contract to destroy mustard agent weapons at the Pueblo Chemical Depot.

Earlier this week the Government Accounting Office rejected a protest by the losing bidder and upheld the contract to Bechtel, which was originally awarded in late September.

Bechtel is under contract to destroy more than 2,500 tons of chemical mustard agent at the depot by 2010 using a water-based bioneutralization process.

Pentagon officials have estimated that the entire project of designing and building a neutralization plant, plus the cost of destroying the weapons, will cost up to $1.5 billion.
