A fire in a small Colorado town has wiped out an historic building. It started Monday afternoon in the town of Victor. That's just a few miles south of Cripple Creek. By Monday evening, the fire had pretty much destroyed the former Antlers Hotel building. The building had been standing on Victor's main street for more than 100 years.
Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire, but they say it's going to take a lot of work before they can do that. The building is not only a total loss, it's also dangerous for investigators to get inside.
Most recently, the building housed an antique store and several apartments. Part of it was being converted into a bed and breakfast. Firefighters say the old age of the building and size of the fire made it hard to put out. It's also too unstable for investigators to go inside to evaluate where the fire started or how it started. That means the building will either have to be partially stabilized or dismantled.
The building next door also had some water and smoke damage. The owners just bought the building in August to house artwork. Although they say they're lucky in a lot of ways, they have a lot of possessions that can't be replaced.
Several businesses in Victor are now pitching in, and the Victor Hotel is providing a temporary shelter to those displaced by the fire.
