State House Speaker Doug Dean resigned Monday to begin his new job as state insurance commissioner on Tuesday.

Governor Owens appointed Dean, a Republican from Colorado Springs, as insurance commissioner Friday. His resignation means that House Majority Leader Lola Spradley of Beulah will serve as interim speaker for one day until her formal election as speaker on Wednesday when the 2003 legislative session begins.

House Republicans, elected Spradley speaker, in November, but the full House must vote on leadership positions. Dean served four terms in the House and could not run for re-election last year because of term limits.
