Tests at 20 sites in a Canon City subdivision could help determine if a nearby uranium mill contaminated the area with plutonium and other heavy metals.

The tests in the Lincoln Park neighborhood will also look for lead and molybdenum. Most of the testing sites will be east and west and within three-miles of the Cotter Corporation mill.

Officials from the Colorado Department of Health and Environment hope to begin testing next month. Members of the Citizens Against Toxic Waste and other formed a committee to identify the areas to be tested.

The mill's plan to accept contaminated dirt from a New Jersey Superfund site recently drew statewide attention.
