Canon City Police Chief Martin Stefanic is calling it quits next month after a 33-year law enforcement career.
Stefanic is leaving because of chronic pain in his feet. The 54-year-old began his career in 1969 in Greeley before heading to Montana for eight years.
He returned to Colorado and took the helm of Canon City's police department 16 years ago. As police chief, he was awarded the medal of valor in 1992 for wounding a suspect who had pointed a gun at three of his officers.
Under Stefanic, the department's staff increased from 23 officers to 34 and has taken over the dispatching for the Fremont County sheriff's department.
