The annual meeting of Fort Lyon Canal water users Monday is expected to attract lots of angry farmers and ranchers.
The canal on the southeastern plains of Colorado diverts 44 percent of the Arkansas River water.
It provides water to Otero, Bent and Prowers counties.
This year, a company called High Plains A and M has been buying land and options under the Fort Lyon. This fall, it reportedly owned more than 20 percent of the shares.
That has angered some who see the company's investment as an attempt to sell the water to growing cities.
Instead of the 125 people who normally attend, canal officials expected about 175. Shareholders are expected to change the bylaws to make it more difficult to transfer water out of the valley.
