Police believe the man who caused the five-car collision, that shut down on I-25 on Wednesday, was involved in four other hit-and-run accidents throughout the city earlier in the day.

Officials say the driver, 52-year-old Frank White, was traveling on the wrong side of the road when his car collided with oncoming traffic near the Garden of The Gods exit.

White was transported to Penrose Main Hospital and remains in the hospital Thursday for observation and evaluation. Once he is released, Mr. White will be charged with First Degree Assault, a class three felony, Vehicular Assault, a class five felony, Reckless Driving, and Compulsory Insurance.

White tested negative for alcohol Wednesday, drug test results are pending.

Accident investigators are still piecing together the events leading up to the accident on I-25 and the four prior in the day.

Well, it's been 6 days since this incident. I suspect that medical conditions such as diabetes would have been evident very quickly. But it normally takes about 5 or 6 days to get the results of drug tests, so I wonder if we'll soon hear the outcome of the investigation?

Posted by: YOU PEOPLE Location: ARE DUMB on Apr 1, 2008 at 12:51 PM
WHO CARES ABOUT HIS AGE! LETS ARGUE OVER THAT? THAT IS IMMATURE.

Posted by: Jen Location: Colorado Sprins on Apr 1, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Christy is VERY right, I am a diabetic AND a young driver, I am very careful on watching my blood sugars before driving, and i am also not ignorant because of my age. Many things could have happened with Mr. White, accusing him of all theses different things is not really anyone's place.

Posted by: Christy Location: Colorado Springs on Apr 1, 2008 at 09:28 AM
I once witnessed an erratic driver on Hwy83 drive up on the center median, and then proceed to hit several cars once he got back on the road. Turns out he was a diabetic with low blood sugar and didn't realize he was having a problem until it was too late. Fortunately no one was hurt in that accident. The problem with Mr. White will probably end up something similar.

Ann- you are just as sad as Apple saying that "young" drivers are as dangerous as "old", age doesn't make a person ready to drive or stop driving. experience, and common knowledge are a few of the things that do, you seem so full of yourself, like you have never messed up. Blaming something like this on age is out of the question.

Eveyone needs to stop blaming the Police for things...this guy must have mental problems or something in order to hit that many people...something is very wrong with him...i think he needs to be held for all of the damage he did to eveyone and then some...but on the other hand i do not understand how he can cause so much heartache and seem not to have any clue at all......

Lucy, you're absolutely right -- "Jeff" is either ignorant or more likely plain stupid. Mr. White was the one responsible for this accident, although we still don't know about extenuating circumstances of illness or accidental drug overdose, for example. But to blame the media for this is no less than stupid.

Posted by: Lucy Location: Colorado Springs on Mar 30, 2008 at 01:16 PM
Contrary to popular belief, not all cops eat doughnuts. As the wife of a police officer, your remark is ignorant Jeff, and frankly the only person to blame is the gentleman who caused the accidents in the first place. It's people like you who blame everybody else for their problems rather than themselves.

Posted by: Jeff Location: Colorado Springs on Mar 29, 2008 at 08:43 AM
The media is also to blame for this wreck they block the roads to when they do their remotes. Also I think the police are to blame as well they were probably at the doughnut shop this is the only way I think that would allow Mr. White to go the wrong way as long as he did. Come on police wakeup

Lacey is my cousin, and I am so glad she didn't get seriously hurt. She is such a sweetie. Love ya girl. Hope everyone else is doing well.

hey Apple, you forgot to mention young inexperienced drives. OH YA, what about the idiots who talk on cell phones and drive

Posted by: JANE Location: COLO SPGS on Mar 28, 2008 at 10:26 AM
WHAT ABOUT JAIL? THERE GOING TO LET THIS MAN OUT ON THE STREETS AFTER CAUSING SUCH A HORRIFIC ACCIDENT....? IN MY OPINION HE SHOULD GO FROM THE HOSPITAL STRAIGHT TO JAIL...

Posted by: David Location: Colorado Springs on Mar 28, 2008 at 09:57 AM
Apple: if you think 52 years old is automatically too old to drive, then perhaps you need to be checked for mental impairment. It's clear that there had to be some problem specific to that driver, but I doubt it was normal aging. Since drug tests are still pending and they haven't mentioned any other medical cause found yet, I'm still leaning towards drug impairment (possibly accidental precription drug overdose) as the most likely cause here.

I was reading the other day that we are 2nd for suiside in colorado, and no one knows why....Well we do have mmilitary coming home without help and thta is part of it and we also have a meth problem that everyone keeps dening that this is a problem, and we also have crappy pay in this state which makes people depressed....

Posted by: Josh Location: Colorado Springs on Mar 28, 2008 at 09:10 AM
I called the CSPD at 12:06 after witnessing the same van back into a white truck at Printers Parkway and Pikes Peak. The driver took off when the light turned green. I followed him and noticed that he had a blank stare on his face as I honked my horn to get his attention. The police said that they had several officers trying to catch up to him, but apparently they never did. What a shame.

Posted by: Concerned Driver Location: Colo. Springs on Mar 28, 2008 at 08:45 AM
Yeah this is scarey! I just wonder what this guy was thinking! I was on Garden Of The Gods shortly after the accident and traffic was backed up! I wondered what had happened. They need to take his drivers lisence away FOREVER!

Posted by: pear Location: midwest on Mar 28, 2008 at 07:48 AM
52 is "old"? Then what would you determine 100 to be? Good grief.

Posted by: Kristin Location: colorado springs on Mar 28, 2008 at 01:05 AM
I'm sorry, but last time I checked 52 was not old. People can be bad drivers no matter what their age is. I'm just glad no one was seriously hurt in this accident.

Posted by: NOT OLD Location: Fountain on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:56 PM
YOU MUST BE VERY YOUNG AND IMMATURE, BECAUSE 52 IS NOT OLD. THIS GUY DEFINITELY HAS OTHER ISSUES. EVEN IF IT'S JUST STUPIDITY.

Posted by: Tom Location: COS on Mar 27, 2008 at 09:29 PM
Ummm...52 isn't that old. He was either on drugs or had some kind of medical condition.

Posted by: Dave Location: C/S on Mar 27, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Apple if you think 52 is old you're not too bright yourself.

Posted by: apple Location: colorado springs on Mar 27, 2008 at 05:22 PM
man i am so tired of these old people who drive and constantly put our lives in danger. they are no better than the dumb people who drive drunk
