A head-on collision involving multiple cars shut down I-25 southbound at Garden Of The Gods Road for hours Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say the driver of a mini-van, 52-year-old Frank White, was traveling on the wrong side of the road when his car collided with oncoming traffic.
A total of five cars were involved in the accident.
The Driver of one of the vehicles involved, Rainford McKenzie, 46, sustained a deep laceration to the forehead and a laceration to the upper left arm. He was treated at Penrose-St. Francis Hospital and is currently being held for observation.
Another victim, 48-year-old Katherine Dunn, had a fracture to the right index finger.
There appear to be no life threatening injuries to any of the persons involved.
White was arrested and charges are currently pending.
Police say they started receiving reports around 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon of a silver mini van driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-25.
"We had started getting reports around Uintah," said Lt. Feese with the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Feese said they tried to make contact with Frank White, but before they could he crashed into several cars. Brad Nidder and his family barely escaped.
"Unfortunately he did get us on the right side," Nidder said.
He said he knew something was wrong when the cars in front of him started swerving, then he saw the silver van coming straight at him. Lacey Brake saw it too.
"He was driving straight down the middle of the lane, he was driving straight towards us," she said.
"I don't know how you go the wrong way for several miles on the highway," Nidder said.
Police still aren't sure how it happened either. They say they didn't find any evidence at the scene to suggest that white was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Investigators are looking into the possibility that White was suffering from a medical condition.
Police say they also believe White was involved in a hit and run accident earlier Wednesday in the Springs.
