Members of the Faternal Order of Police and concerned residents gathered Tuesday during a city council meeting in support of the Fountain police chief, who was placed on administrative leave last week for undisclosed reasons.

Fountain City Manager Scott Trainor says the decision to put Charles Crawford on administrative leave was due to a personnel matter; a matter he says he can’t and won’t discuss. He also adds it’s a matter that is solely up to him, not the mayor or city council, despite pleas from residents.

However some residents say they won’t give up. Karen Lippincott and her husband are long-time Fountain residents. They say Crawford was the best chief they’ve ever had.

Trainor says he hopes to have this resolved as soon as possible. Although the reason for the leave remains unknown, it is known that there is no criminal investigation in the case.

Enough is enough. Mayor Howells and her dirty politics need to get out of City Hall. Fact, opinion and suggestion!

Posted by: Bill from Boston Location: El Paso County on Apr 21, 2008 at 06:39 AM
I guess I'm wondering why "Anonymous1" and "Anonymous2" have dominated these comments? Are you aware you're caught in a "memo war"? When you go back and forth as you have, it's mundane, personal, whiny, and is way off the point of this forum. Which is?? Oh, to express your opinion and offer suggestions, hopefully using facts and not emotions. I see too many defensive and personal jabs and attempts at trying to convince others of their viewpoint. Are you aware that your buttons are getting pushed...maybe for fun or to fuel your anger...?? You don't need to respond when someone disagrees with you, or stupidly slams you for your comments. Lastly, as I've said before, this whole thing smells. The problem I have is the SECRECY! This is just fomenting rumors and giving a basis for speculation and manipulation, all worth zero without facts. Mayor Howell and Mr. Trainor, please open up for Fountain, EVEN if the responsibility may point at you or others...you'll get more respect.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 20, 2008 at 09:58 AM
Let's wait and see what the Mayor will do to show her support for the Police Department. The men and women in this department have earned it. She knows that.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 03:50 PM
CAN YOU READ? You know very well he is not allowed to talk. You don't want the truth. You spread the rumors. I would not be surprised if the tax payer not only ends up paying the Chief's salary, but a hefty settlement when all is said and done. Courtesy of Sparky, Mayor Howells and the City Manager who handled this matter exceptionally poor. Cheers!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 03:12 PM
vile not vial :)

Posted by: anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 03:06 PM
again i would ask any of you supporters of the chief, where is he? why has he not come forward to take responsibility? is this little group of supporters finding comfort in attacking others to try to take the spotlight off what this is really all about? the rumors are out there, come on chief, lets clear them up...take responsibility and lets move on. the citizens pay your salary, i believe we deserve the truth. maybe its time for a press conference....

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 12:56 PM
The vial and vindictive actions of Mayor Howells toward anyone criticizing her or Heaven forbid even holding her accountable, are speaking for themselves. She feeds confidential information to some willing helpers who then spread it for her. She hopes that she can bully the opponent out of the way by unleashing the rumor mill and the media on them, rather then letting a proper investigation take it's course. Just remember, do not talk about her or her family. That is not nice! Don't do to her as she does upon others.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Where does Jeri Howells' sense of entitlement stem from? Why would she think that her calling the City Manager when involved in a traffic violation will change the outcome? Usually such maladaptive behavior occurs when it was reinforced in the past. Let's take a look!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 11:18 PM
After reading several of these types of blogs recently, it seems that no one can figure out that the Chief is under an administrative investigation. This means that the facts are by nature, confidential. The subject has rights according to both state law and Title 42 of the United States Code. Obviously he is not allowed to "come forward" nor is anyone associated with the investigation. This obviously doesn't apply to "step-brothers" of department heads, who are illegaly briefed by Council members on confidential personnel matters from an executive session. The Chief may not come forward, but hopefully, the truth will. Unfortunately, no one seems to be too interested in reporting the truth.

Rational thinking citizens will RECALL this Mayor.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 06:43 PM
How many accidents has the Jeri C Howells been involved in?

Posted by: anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 05:14 PM
I would hope that any rational thinking citizen would wait for all of the facts of this matter to be made public before rushing to judgement. I personally find the attack on the mayors family completely uncalled for, and i would ask why the chief has not come forward to the community he works for and has promised to protect with the real story, if he has done nothing wrong then where is he? i, as a citizen and taxpayer, would like to hear from him.

Sparky is the king of gossip, in this case the Queen of gossip. He is very good in the art of practicing Sully, he falsely and with malicious intent; attacks the good name and reputation of others; when in fact his real name is known to many as Louis. You can see him riding around with the Fire Chief almost every day, he also lives with guy. Many would say, he could give any wash woman a run for her money.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 14, 2008 at 08:27 PM
Who is Sparky?

Posted by: Truthurts on Apr 13, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Corruption has many meanings, it can also relate to the abuse of power in decision-making processes. It is a form of behavior that deviates from ethics, morality, tradition, law and civic virtue. Has anyone noticed this type of behavior, it is a very popular practice for some elected officials, you decide who it is.

Isn't it interesting that both Mayor Howells and her daughter have jobs with the County in absence of a formal education? Did they get the jobs before, after or while she was a County Commissioner?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 12, 2008 at 08:20 PM
Sparky provided the "anonymous tips" to the media?! Seriously? Who would have thought that little ankle biter had it in him?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 12, 2008 at 08:00 PM
What a lovely idea! Maybe the money will be enough to get you some treatment too. Your reality testing seems not quite intact. We will keep you posted.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 12, 2008 at 04:48 PM
You are so thoughtful. Always thinking of others. And I betdeep down inside you really like Mr.Lender and the great Mayor. Maybe you can have a bake sale outside Wendy's?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 12, 2008 at 12:34 PM
We were thinking more down the line of a community effort to get treatment for Al Lender's anger issues and a driving instructor for the Mayor. Community safety is so important.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 11, 2008 at 07:12 PM
They were cute. Could you next time have them in some various colors?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 11, 2008 at 04:04 PM
I am glad you enjoyed the signs. They were "abuser proofed" so that Mr. Lender would not hurt himself or others. Al has some "issues" - you know. We are happy to accommodate his special needs to assure the safety of others.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 11, 2008 at 03:50 PM
There are some psychotic ramblings are ont his web site. All the finger pointing, all the guessing as to what took place.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 11, 2008 at 02:41 PM
That's all you've got? Your usual psychotic ramblings and paraphrasing someone else? Come on! Surely you could do better then that ;)

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 10, 2008 at 05:15 PM
God help you if you brought this nasty conduct into my home, upon my loved ones! So, you are in love with Crawford? Hmmmmmmm.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 10, 2008 at 05:09 PM
That little "Rally" the other night was funny, especially with the little signs, it really gives the people of Fountain a good laugh at your expense. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 10, 2008 at 04:58 PM
Anything could be handled differently, but the fact is there are a few that like to spread lies and like to cause trouble. Some in that police department you are right, they DO NEED To BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. Maybe now the City Manger can start to clear out a few of them, and the City could go back to treating each other nicely. Lets hope.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 10, 2008 at 01:14 PM
No matter what side you find yourself on; there are some indisputable facts here. The inappropriate handling of this personnel matter has caused much disgust in the Fountain Community. NOBODY would like to get treated this way. God help you if you brought this nasty conduct into my home, upon my loved ones! Chief Crawford and his family are members of the Fountain Community. We treat each other better then this. Who taught the people running this show, that it is OK to treat others this way? We must hold them accountable! This personnel matter could have and should have been handled very differently. It is not optional, it is what we demand! Get it right.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 10, 2008 at 11:49 AM
This is cute :) The Mayor-hows-Lender-team can poke some fun at themselves. A good sense of humor is always helpful.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 6, 2008 at 05:21 PM
Here is how Mayor Howelles met Al Lender.... Picture it...30 years after the war......Mayor Howells was the was prision nurse. Mayor Howells tried to help Al escape. This was last weeks CBS made for TV movie...you missed it? It was called "How I Helped the Begal Man."

Stop using my neighborhood watch email to send your trash. I thought when we signed up for the neighborhood watch program it was to support the neighborhood, not some attempt to have trash sent to us.

Please don't call the Mayor-hows-defense Pathetic. They are trying so hard and that should count for something.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 6, 2008 at 01:19 PM
I would say your accusations are comical, but all I can really say is they are Pathetic.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 6, 2008 at 12:29 PM
"Mayor hows" will win again? Are you sure about that? Are we talking about the same person? Maybe I just did not get the meaning of your posting. It appears some sentences were left unfinished and the grammar is a little rough. But we appreciate your attempt to help - regardless. She needs all the help she can get.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 6, 2008 at 11:52 AM
What? No answer to why Mayor Howells would violate the City Charter? No comment on why the tape recorder got turned off during an executive session? What about her ticket? Did she try to get her ticket 'taken care off' by calling the City Manager? What about her alliance with Lender? She has to come clean about a number of issues or she will most certainly be out of office. Your best defense is to throw out accusations here? Are you hoping for distraction or attention deficit?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 5, 2008 at 04:56 PM
How things should be: For example, the City Council should hire an investigation firm or the FBI or State Patrol to investigate the Fountain Police Department for certain individuals that work there since there seems to be some real shady stuff going on there, all the lies and rumors from people that were hired to keep our city safe and treat people fair. Next, the City Council and the City manager should FIRE some of these certain individuals that seem to be in the middle of this. Next, your police chief should come clean on what he has done and tellthe truth instead of having the FOP (which the leader of the FOP) was always caught sleeping in the cemetary while on duty. It seems that shady people all seem to stick together and never admitt their own faults. As for a Recall, Mayor hows will win again, and hopefully instead of the police chief being gone, more police officers will be gone. Thats how it should happen.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 5, 2008 at 01:55 PM
How things should be: For example, Mayor Howells should stay out of City personnel matters - she does not even grasp that concept (NO! Pulling strings in executive meetings with the tape recorder turned off can’t happen either). She should support all of the City departments - she is too busy promoting herself. She should pay her traffic ticket (like the rest of us do when we get one), not cry to the City Manager about getting one. She should represent the people of Fountain, not one derailed individual who squeaks loud and demands a lot of attention. She should credit herself only for her own accomplishments and not take credit for that of others. I hear much talk about Jeri Howells these days, but the most common remark made is not about her alleged "Class" - it is about RECALL - as in: Recall this Mayor!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 5, 2008 at 11:42 AM
What is the basis and/or pay off for the strange alliance between Mayor Howells and Al Lender?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 5, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Class is not the word that comes to mind when speaking of Mayor Howells; Manipulating is more like it.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 4, 2008 at 08:14 PM
She has too much class to say anything about this. Which is the way it should be.

Posted by: Russell Location: Fountain on Apr 4, 2008 at 05:59 PM
No, nothing. Nor would she.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 3, 2008 at 08:57 AM
Has the Mayor done anything in support of the Police Department lately?

Posted by: Paula on Mar 28, 2008 at 04:49 PM
This rally was the right thing to do and I would do it again - any day. If the police need our help for a change, then it's time to step up to the plate. I support them and their Chief. I am tired of the chronic victims and wanna-be-media-stars that hold lengthy speeches without substance. If your need for attention is that great, I suggest you try getting it by appropriate means. Volunteer, do something for somebody and don't expect a pay off. Get a life! My sincere gratitude goes to the man an women who serve our communities and have to put up with these few but seriously troubled folks.

Posted by: Truthhurts on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:30 PM
When the city hires a city leader, it is with the understanding that they work for the people and not just for the egos of a few elected officials, and two people burned out on drugs. We need management that cares about the people living in Fountain, not people who participate in graft, and hate peace officers.

Posted by: Russell Location: Fountain on Mar 27, 2008 at 09:16 PM
I am proud of the officers and citizens who used their right to freedom of speech to support a person like Chief Crawford. I am sure he is touched by the gesture. It is easy to complain about the police because they are the ones who point out what we do wrong. Let's face it, nobody likes to be told they screwed up. For those of you who say there is no accountability in that department I say to you that there is no way you could survive under the scrutiny that the police are under. On duty or not, they are held to high standards. The mention of corruption and harassment just indicates that you have all too frequent run-ins with police, or no idea what is going on.

Posted by: Be Happy on Mar 27, 2008 at 07:13 PM
How about we stop bashing everyone and just wait and see what happens? Everyone can have a voice.

Posted by: Heather Location: Fountain on Mar 27, 2008 at 07:02 PM
Who is Al Lender? He is someone who has been recalled, has had a past with drugs (whether selling or doing, its still bad),and flies off the handle for no reason, and yet for some reason he has a lot of pull around this city. For some reason the Mayor really likes him and wants him involved. Lets take a look at that. The mayor wants to get rid of the police chief, yet she wants a felon involved everything. That should send up some flags if I may say so myself.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 27, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Al Lender displays another angry outburst, rips a sign apart and slams it on the table at City Council. He rants about his usual paranoia, declares a harmless sign to be a deadly weapon... He engages in the destruction of property in front of the Council. They give him the time and stage to perform once again. He and his friends/employees attempt to intimidate people in front of City Hall. And you are concerned about people clapping and cheering in support of the Chief? Are you for real? Given Lender's ineffective coping skills, I would guess he has some domestic violence issues as well - possibly even a record to proof it. Has the Mayor addressed his behavior at Council? Does she lack the courage? Does she enable? The Mayor does not represent the average working, tax paying and law abiding citizen when she aligns with such an individual. She has a problem.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 27, 2008 at 01:59 PM
Enough with the name calling! Conduct yourself in fashion that actually supports the point you are trying to make. Nobody with an ounce of common sense would believe just for a moment the posting you gripe about was actually written by a woman named Maren. Come on! It is not that hard to figure out!

Posted by: margie Location: fountain on Mar 27, 2008 at 01:42 PM
First and foremost the whole city council is corrupt as is the fire chief. Look into the fire department, the same thing is going on. I believe as the other person stated we" the people are the govenment and we should have the right to know what he did. We are paying his and all their wages. Let me explain a battleaxe, with the initials of jh. How does her son rate when he was involved in the death of another person, nothing happened to him. Go figure???? Please let us get rid of thsi existing council and get some new blood in there. They are not for the people but for themselves.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 27, 2008 at 01:28 PM
What's with the hostility? That is all you've got? Personal attacks and temper tantrums? In case you did not notice, the posting you are so upset about was posted by somebody who is certainly not the sister-in-law of the officer who wrote the ticket. That was really a little bit too obvious. It was worth a try, I guess :) The game of lies and deception is in full swing. But you need to keep your cool and coordinate better with your other players. What a waste of energy!

Posted by: Heather Location: Fountain on Mar 27, 2008 at 12:45 PM
I just wanted to say "way to go" to the citizens who were there on Tuesday at the rally. That was wonderful. I happened to drive by and have to say it was incredible. It just goes to show what a wonderful man Chief Crawford must be to have citizens pull together to show their respect and support. So why is everyone bad mouthing the police chief and the police officers, when we should take a look at the Fire Chief? Individuals driving by wearing fire t-shirt with horrible remarks on it. Huh... I wonder if they are with Fountain Fire department. And if anyone should hang there head in shame it is the people that bad mouth the sworn officers who risk their lives everyday. And for someone to bad mouth and belittle them is something to be ashamed of. Oh and this whole traffic ticket was announced in city council. I was there and heard it. So that is possibly where "Maren" heard it. So that is no secret to anyone. So if anyone has the crazy imagination of making things up, its you.

Posted by: ANONYMOUS Location: FOUNTAIN on Mar 27, 2008 at 12:30 PM
I am sorry but the fact that the mayor got a ticket was anounced in a city council meeting. Apparently you were not there. So if "Maren" knows this it could have been when it was announced. How dare you belittle and put someone down for voicing there opinion. That just shows what kind of person that you are. After reading your comment you clearly are not the smartest one in the world. So "anonymous" clearly you have been in trouble with the law at one point or another to not have trust and respect for people who put their lives on the line everyday and they would do the same for you. If anything I hope that you are the one who hangs your head in shame, no wonder you remain nameless, I would too if I were you and thank goodness I am not. I hope that someday you will need their help for something, and then you could truely understand how wonderful these individuals are.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Fountain on Mar 27, 2008 at 11:56 AM
I wonder just who is what here? Do we just get up and support someone simply because some one else thinks their right? I believe we need to know the truth. Mr. Lender might know something the rest of us should know!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:03 AM
First what is a battleaxe? And second, please tell me you really are not as stupid as you appear on here by saying "someone was fired" over a ticket. I am hoping your brother in law who we will not metion by name, hangs his head in shame for your unrealistic ramblings on here. Noone has been fired, but after reading your post, it proves you yourself do not comprehend the english language, nor can you read it. The Chief was placed on ADMIN leave, big difference in him being fired. So which man lost his job? Was there some big decision that was mad when you posted this? And if your brother in law really told you this, it agains proves that some of the police members have no morals or integrity by discussing police matters. Please, Maren, stick to what you seem to do best, writing fiction, and let your brother in law stick to what he does best. spread lies. You both seem to work well together.

Posted by: Jack Location: Security on Mar 27, 2008 at 09:46 AM
Fountain Police always had that 'good ol boy' thing going on, I once got stopped because I didn't use a turn signal. If I knew I could bribe my way out of the ticket, I should have tried, huh? I hope this angers enough people to get all of the corrupt people out, and make the rest question their decision to support them. Mr. Trainor needs to tell everyone why he made his decision, we pay his salary, we deserve to know if he's cleaning up or making a mess.

Posted by: phrases 101 on Mar 26, 2008 at 08:19 PM
The apple and the tree does not make any sense here, as it is used to establish a trend based on a genetic trait. You need to work on using phrases correctly. Don't give up, you will get it some day :) on the bright side, your spelling appears much improved today ! Just one more thing: You shall not lie.

Posted by: Maria on Mar 26, 2008 at 08:09 PM
Did you see Al Lender throw a temper tantrum at City Council last night? He performed a little later then his usual time, but it is on video and for the public to enjoy.

Posted by: BillfromBoston Location: Fountain on Mar 26, 2008 at 11:44 AM
I'm not sure what "won't give up" means. And if Crawford was "the best chief they've ever had", does this mean that they will support him staying in his position if they don't even know what he's done, if anything?? Lastly, we are the taxpayers. We are supposed to "run" the government, not the opposite. I just wish there was a way to rip open this shroud of secrecy in a legal manner! Do we not have an atty in Fountain who could check into this? Maybe Mr. Trainor's position is NOT in the best interests of the citizens of Fountain! IF the "matter is solely up to him", I think the city charter needs to be changed to fix this. How can one person stop the citizens from finding out what's going on??!! Why do some in government always think they're above the citizens and don't feel they have to be open with us?? It's just not a good situation for Fountain.

Posted by: What integrity? Location: Northglenn on Mar 26, 2008 at 08:15 AM
Maybe if the chief paid more attention to the integrity of his officers, he could teach them not to sleep with married women. Seems to me the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Posted by: Watchdog Location: Fountain on Mar 26, 2008 at 05:44 AM
Did citizens notice Al Lender had his employees with a stolen support the Chief sign with rude remarks written on it,they were wearing fire department T-shirts in a black truck, they were driving reckless in circles around city hall. Way to go Al, and you wonder why they kicked you out of Connecticut. We can all chip in and send you to the next village.

Posted by: David Location: Colorado Springs on Mar 26, 2008 at 12:44 AM
I understand that the Fountain city manager (who suspended the police chief) has been on the job for only a couple of months, so I can't tell if he has guts to get rid of a real problem, or if he's stupid to fire a longer term police chief. I guess time will tell as always...

Posted by: Maren on Mar 25, 2008 at 09:54 PM
the reason why the police chief was let go is because my brother-in-law gave the mayor a ticket for running a stop sign. she complained to the police chief, and he took my brother in law's side. so she had him fired. a man lost his job over a ticket! why cant this battleaxe just follow the law like a normal citizen? what makes her above the law?
