Qwest Communications plans to cut 320 jobs in five states including Colorado.

Company officials say they'll try to eliminate the positions through attrition until March 30th and will then resort to layoffs.

Qwest is targeting jobs in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa and Utah. The Denver-based phone company says lagging demand for service is to blame.

Employees who choose to leave or are laid off will get severance pay. Union officials don't' expect many people to voluntarily leave.

All the jobs being cut are union-covered. Qwest officials have confirmed that managers have received a three percent annual bonus.
