Police say Colorado Rockies right-handed pitcher Shawn Chacon was apparently defending a friend when he hit a Loveland man in the face with a beer bottle early Friday at a bar in Fort Collins.
Twenty-three-year-old Aaron Giammarco of Loveland was intoxicated when he punched Chacon's friend Charles Aguilar in the chin.
In response, Chacon allegedly struck Giammarco in the face with a beer bottle.
He was arrested for third-degree assault. Giammarco was also cited for third-degree assault and was treated and released from Poudre Valley Hospital.
Chacon will appear in Larimer County court Dec. 23. He faces up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted.
Colorado Rockies media relations director Jay Alves says the organization is aware of the situation but he wouldn't say anything else.
