The U.S. Forest Service has scaled back its plans to salvage dead trees in the Pike National Forest where a wildfire scorched 137,000 acres last summer.
Originally, dead trees from 50,000 acres of forest were to be retrieved. Wednesday the Forest Service decided to reduce the salvage effort to 10,000 acres so it can completed by the end of next summer.
Officials have proposed selling the timber as one way to clean up the forest, which contains thousands of burned ponderosa pines and Douglas firs.
Hayman Fire Restoration team member Pat Hessenflow says the trees will decline in value the longer they sit in the burn area.
