Army Officer Dies After Workout

A public affairs officer assigned to the Tenth Mountain Division died this week after a workout at an Army base in Virginia.

The military announced today that 46-year-old Major Douglas "Duke" Duecker was on temporary duty for training at Fort Belvoir in Virginia when he died Wednesday after exercising at a gym on the base.

The Liverpool native enlisted in the Army in October 1989, and graduated from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in 1996.

Duecker came to Fort Drum in New York in February after serving in Kuwait since May 2003. He deployed into Iraq with the First Armor Division during 2004 to support combat operations.

He is survived by his mother and two sisters.
