Mason Wildfire

An erratic fire in Custer County is now up to about 1000 acres as flames continue to char a rugged area of the San Isabel National Forest.

Residents of the rural town of Wetmore piled children and pets into cars and fled today as the fast-burning wildfire threatened their homes.

Firefighters are mounting a counterattack with air tankers and ground crews that are keeping the flames away from structures.

No injuries have been reported.

Officials say 45 homes were evacuated before dawn in the Greenwood subdivision of Wetmore, about 100 miles south of Denver. It unclear exactly how many people left.

The fire is also threatening one commercial building and 50 outbuildings.

More than 130 firefighters, three heavy air tankers, six single-engine tankers and two helicopters are at the scene.

Fire trucks and crews are also standing guard in the subdivision.
