Health officials are warning people to stay out of Fountain Creek. And that's not simply because of recent sewage spills in Colorado Springs.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recently collected samples from the creek that show elevated bacteria counts, particularly in summer months.
Heather Maio, director of environmental health for the Pueblo City-County Health Department, said that in addition to the spills, other sources also contribute to contamination during times of high flows.
Dr. Chris Nevin-Woods, Pueblo health department director, said that people are most likely to come in contact with the water when bacteria counts are highest.
