DUI Enforcement

This is the second weekend of the state's crackdown on drunk driving. It is the largest DUI enforcement in the state's history.
There are 1200 extra police officers on the roads trying to reduce alcohol related fatalities.

Police say the reason for the crackdown is because of last December's high rate of drunk driving deaths. They say of the 55 people killed on the roads, 40% were because of drunk drivers.

The crackdown started december 20th and will continue until january 5th. Still, police say, even with the heightened awareness, DUI accidents haven't stopped altogether. An elderly woman was killed yesterday morning when a drunk driver was going the wrong way on the road. The driver's blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.

Police say the best way to keep yourself safe is to wear your seatbelt and drive safely.
