United Working to Cut Costs

The union leadership representing United Airlines flight attendants is urging its members to support the airline's cost-cutting measures. United filed a motion late yesterday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court that gives cooperating unions the chance to keep their labor contracts, at least through the spring, if they agree to voluntary pay cuts.

United has until February 15th to cut costs or it could lose the remainder of the $1.5 billion in interim financing it has from a group of banks.

United's proposed cuts would take scheduled raises away from
pilots and flight attendants. Pilots also would take 29% pay
cuts and flight attendants would take home 9% less pay. Flight dispatchers and meteorologists would see 13% pay cuts.
