Cotter Mill Wants Action

A uranium processing mill wants the state to speed up approval for its plan to accept Superfund waste from New Jersey.

Cotter Corporation vice president Rich Ziegler says that jobs could be cut at the mill if it does receive the 470,000 tons of soil. He also said the company plans to use the material to cover mill tailings and to reduce future emissions of radon from existing tailings ponds.

Cotter has not been able to receive shipment of materials for processing since July because of worker safety problems.

In October, the state health department ruled that Cotter's environmental assessment for the new project did not fully address transportation issues and social and economic impacts on the community.
