A machine used by doctors to catch killer cancer cells in patients may someday help police catch murder suspects.
Researchers at the University of Denver are using a Wave Nucleic Acid Fragment Analysis System machine to analyze DNA. The machine was designed to help doctors tell the difference between healthy and cancerous cells.
While the machine is not as accurate as DNA fingerprinting, microbiology professor Phil Danielson says it can quickly help police rule out some suspects, and help them focus on more probable suspects.
The machine can also help to more quickly identify victims of mass disasters. Officials considered using it to sift through remains at the World Trade Center, but decided the science behind it was too new.
