Possible Dismissal

A tenured University of Colorado professor facing possible dismissal after being accused of plagiarism and lying about his American Indian ethnicity is vehemently denying those charges.

Ward Churchill has submitted a 50-page, single-spaced typewritten report to a university committee investigating the allegations. Churchill has come under fire for his essay that compares some victims of the September eleventh terrorist attacks to the Nazi bureaucrat who planned the Holocaust.

His lawyer David Lane says Churchill submitted his tribal membership card showing he's an associate member of the Keetoowah Cherokee band, and an explanation for the plagiarism charges being investigated by the committee.

Lane says Churchill's tribal membership was based on an investigation by a tribal genealogist.
