A Fort Carson soldier who says he shot an Iraqi man because he lunged toward another soldier's weapon has been acquitted of murder charges.
A jury of four enlisted soldiers and two officers found Staff Sergeant Shane Werst innocent today in Fort Hood Texas. The judge in the case also found him not guilty of obstruction of justice even though Werst admitted he tried to plant a weapon on the man.
Werst shot Naser Ismail last January during house raids for insurgents. Prosecutors argued that Werst killed him in retaliation for an Army captain's death in a mortar attack hours earlier.
Several soldiers testified that they and Werst handcuffed and detained other Iraqis that night without any problems and that he wasn't out for revenge.
