A fellow Denver police officer choked back tears while reading a Bible passage Friday morning, during the funeral service for fallen Detective Donald Young.
At least a thousand mourners packed the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Denver to pay tribute to the decorated police detective, who was shot to death on Sunday.
Large television screens were set up outside the church to allow thousands of others to watch and listen to the service.
The 43-year-old Young was with his partner, providing security for a baptismal celebration, when a gunman opened fire on the off-duty officers.
Young suffered several gunshot wounds to the back, and died a short time later.
Detective John Bishop was treated and released for a minor injury.
Police Chief Gerry Whitman had said he wanted Young's killer caught before his funeral.
